The Shock of the New

Campbell’s Soup or Drowning Girl,

Andy Warhol, lips that curl

Sucking soup through slender straw

Dripping paint on canvas floor

Leichtenstein’s the name I hear

Modern art – O dear, O dear

Is it art or is it scam?

Muscles bulge on body tanned

Behind, a nude lies on the sand.

‘Keep ‘em flying’ is the cry

But will the public ever buy?

‘I Saw The Figure Five In Gold’

And all my paintings have been sold

My Monroe face in green and blue

David Hockney, Sigmar Stew

They’re all the rage –

I’m quite a star –

I’m fooling them –

          It’s shocking new.
